The Mahonesa class was a class of Spanish 5th–rate frigates, armed with 34 cannons and part of the “Armada Real”. Often considered the best frigates in the Spanish Navy, they had a designed crew of around 280, and were armed with 26 12–Pounder guns in the lower deck and 8 6–Pounder guns in the upperdeck.
HMS Hamadryad 1797
The HMS Hamadryad, before her capture, was named the “Ninfa” — a 36–gun Spanish frigate built at Mahon, on the island of Minorca. After her capture, Ninfa was taken to Gibraltar where she was commissioned under Thomas Elphinstone as the HMS Hamadryad. Her career as an English ship was a short one however, after capturing two privateers, she sank while trying to shelter from a storm in Algiers Bay on 25 December 1797. This ship pack can also be used to represent the British Mahonesa class frigate “HMS Mahonesa 1796”.
