Pendraken 10mm World War II

American - Sherman tank - 75mm with Calliope RL

World War II (1939 to 1945), was the largest conflict the world has ever seen. It involved countries from every continent with land battles taking place in Europe, Asia and Africa. Different theatres were active at different times and involved different combatants, with Germany, Italy, Romania, Hungary and Japan forming the Axis Powers, and Great Britain, the Soviet Union, the United States, alongside France, Poland, and Canada forming the Allied Powers.

The main theatres of operation include Western Europe (1939-1941), the Eastern Front (1941-1945), North Africa (1940-1943), Western Europe (1943-1945) and the Far East (1940-1945). This period is probably the most popular in historical wargaming and Pendraken offers one of the largest selections of WWII products in 10mm scale, covering all major and most minor nations.

The M4 Sherman, officially Medium Tank, M4, was the most widely used medium tank by the United States and Western Allies in World War II. The one-axis gyrostabilizer was not precise enough to allow firing when moving, but it did help keep the reticle on target so that when the tank did stop to fire, the gun would be aimed in roughly the right position. The designers of the M4 stressed mechanical reliability, ease of production and maintenance, durability, standardization of parts and ammunition in a limited number of variants, and moderate size and weight. These factors, combined with the Sherman's then-superior armor and armament, outclassed German light and medium tanks fielded in 1939-42. The M4 went on to be produced in large numbers, being the most produced tank in American history. The Soviet T-34 was the only tank produced in larger numbers than the Sherman, though the service life of the Sherman far exceeded that of the T-34 tank.

The M4 Calliope (pronounced "cal-ee-ope" - see note below) was fitted with an overhead T34 rocket launcher approximately 3 feet above the turret. The launcher assembly weighed 1840 Pounds (835 kgs) and was comprised of 60 tubes made of plastic (exchanged for magnesium tubes post-war) and mounted in an upper bank of 36 tubes, with two side-by-side banks of 12 below it, one on each side of the elevation arm attached to the gun. The Calliope fired the M8 rocket, a 4.5 inch (114 mm) fin-stabilized projectile armed with High-Explosive, which had a maximum range of 4200 yards (4km). Individually, these rockets were not very accurate, but as a barrage weapon, they were extremely effective.

While the T34 Calliope was only deployed in limited numbers, it was used in various actions in 1945 by the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 12th, and 14th armored divisions. Even with its limited combat action, it was effective as an infantry support weapon and for psychological warfare as well.

A note regarding the naming of the weapon: Its name comes from the calliope, a musical instrument also known as a steam organ, which has similar parallel or clustered pipes. According to The Online Tank Museum, the name originated from a witness of the weapon being fired.
