Pendraken 10mm World War I (East Africa) British - RML 2.5-in Mountain Gun (screw gun) with Indian Crew

World War I (also known as the Great War) was a global war originating in Europe that lasted from 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918. The war drew in all the world's great powers assembled in two opposing alliances: the Allies (Russia, France, Great Britain, Italy, Japan and the United States) versus the Central Powers (German, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria). WWI was one of the deadliest conflicts in history, and paved the way for major political changes, including revolutions in many of the nations involved and to the Second World War twenty-one years later.

The gun was a rifled muzzle-loader. Gun and carriage were designed to be broken down into their basic parts so they could be transported by pack animals (4 mules) or men. The barrel and breech were carried separately, and screwed together for action, hence the name "screw gun". Either 4 or 6 guns (sources are imprecise) were returned to service from Southern African garrisons in 1916 and were employed by the Nyasaland-Rhodesian Field Force in the campaign in German East Africa.

These guns were used in the Second Boer War (1899 - 1902) on its standard mountain gun carriage, and also with the Natal Field Battery at Elandslaagte and Diamond Fields Artillery at Kimberley on field carriages, which had larger wheels and provided greater mobility. Also having gunpowder (instead of cordite) charges, the guns proved to be ineffectual and outclassed by Boer ordnance and was replaced by the BL 10 pounder Mountain Gun beginning in 1901.
