Pendraken 10mm Crusades: European Heavy Knights

The Crusades, were military expeditions, beginning in the late 11th century, that were organized by western European Christians in response to centuries of Muslim wars of expansion. Their objectives were to check the spread of Islam, to retake control of the Holy Land in the eastern Mediterranean, to conquer pagan areas (primarily the Baltic region), and to recapture formerly Christian territories; they were seen by many of their participants as a means of redemption and pennance for sins. Between 1095, when the First Crusade was launched, and 1291, when the Latin Christians were finally expelled from their kingdom in Syria, there were numerous expeditions to the Holy Land, to Spain, and even to the Baltic. The Crusades continued for several centuries after 1291, however Crusading declined rapidly during the 16th century with the advent of the Protestant Reformation and the decline of papal authority.

The Byzantine Emperor Alexios I feared the advance of the Seljuk Turks towards his capital city of Constantinople and called upon Pope Urban II for assistance from Christendom in securing the city. The Byzantines were Greek Orthodox Christians though a state of schism with the Catholic Church had existed since 1054. The launch of the crusade presented Pope Urban with a chance to move closer to the Orthodox Byzantines and to heal the rift. Unfortunately, a contingent known as the 'Peoples' Crusade, composed of an initial rush of ill-disciplined zealots, sparked an horrific outbreak of antisemitism, especially in the Rhineland, as they sought to finance their expedition by taking Jewish money and attacking any group perceived as enemies of Christ in their own lands. The 'Peoples' Crusade contingent caused real problems outside the city of Constantinople before Alexios ushered them over the Bosporus and into Asia Minor, where the Seljuk Turks destroyed them.

Teutonic Knights wore white surcoats with a simple black cross. A cross pattée was sometimes used in their coat of arms; this style of cross was later used for military decoration and insignia by the Kingdom of Prussia and Germany as the Iron Cross.

Templar Knights, also known as the Order of Solomon's Temple, the Knights Templar or simply the Templars, customarily wore white surcoats with a red cross, similar to that of the Cross of St John. A cross potent variant was also common prior to the 13th century, with the cross pattée (similar to the Maltese Cross) becoming the most recognizable cross used by the Templars afterward.

The Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, also known simply as the Knights Hospitaller, wore a black surcoat with a white ordinary cross. They too however eventually adopted a variant of the cross pattée which eventually became known as the Maltese Cross. Typically, flags of the Knights Hospitaller were red with an ordinary white cross dividing the field equally into fours, with bannerets having a smaller ordinary cross centered in the front third of the pennon.

In the Late Medieval period, these figures can still be used for common troops as mail, brigandine and gambeson remained common forms of armor until the 16th and 17th centuries.
