Messerschmitt BF109E-7 (drop tank)

It is rather difficult to jump straight into a discussion about the E-7 variant without a review of the E-4 where the cockpit canopy was revised to an easier-to-produce, "squared-off" design, also contributing to an improved field of view for the pilot. This canopy, which was also retrofitted to many E-1s and E-3s, was largely unchanged until the introduction of a welded, heavy-framed canopy on the G series in the autumn of 1942. The E-4 would be the basis for all further Bf 109E developments and was also available as a fighter-bomber with equipment very similar to the previous E-1/B. It was known as E-4/B (DB 601Aa engine) and E-4/BN (DB 601N engine). A total of 561 of all E-4 variants were built, which included a total of 496 E-4 sub-variants built as such: 250 E-4s, 211 E-4/Bs, 15 E-4/Ns, and 20 E-4/BNs.

The E-7 was the next major production variant replacing the E-4, entering service and seeing combat at the end of August 1940. One of the limitations of the earlier Bf 109Es was their short range of 660 km (410 mi) and limited endurance, as the design was originally conceived as a short-range interceptor. The E-7 addressed this problem as it became the first Bf 109 sub-type capable of carrying a drop tank, usually the standardized Luftwaffe 300 L (80 US gal) capacity unit mounted on a center-line rack under the fuselage. This modification increased the range of the E-7 variant to 1,325 km (820 mi). Alternatively, a bomb could be fitted in place of the drop tank and the E-7 could then be used as a Jabo fighter-bomber. A total of 438 E-7s of all variants were built during the war.
